Overview:

The recitation section is designed to supplement the SOCY 1001 lecture material and to provide a venue to discuss and explore material from the lectures and assigned readings. The primary goal of the recitation is to encourage the learning process through interactive feedback and discussion – thus your preparation for and participation in each recitation session are critical to your success as well as the success of everyone else in the classroom. In order to create a comfortable and open environment where all members of the class are willing to share their thoughts and ideas it is required that all students behave in a respectful manner towards one another at all times. While enthusiastic debate and discussion are essential, insensitive or rude comments based on race, gender, class, sexual orientation, religion, disability, or beliefs will not be tolerated at any time.

Grading: Recitation is an integral part of this course as it is the primary place for small group discussion of the lecture and reading material.  Regular attendance is required, since it is vital to your success in this course. Of a possible 450 points for the course, 150 of them come from recitation quizzes, participation, and work. Throughout the semester, you will take 3 quizzes on WEB CT, each worth 5 points.  An additional 25 points, of the 450, will come from your attendance and participation in the recitation. You will also be responsible to co-facilitating discussion in one recitation meeting. You will be graded on the quality and thoughtfulness of your preparation, for another 10 points. In addition, you will write a 5-7 page paper, worth 100 points, which will be graded by the T.A and explained and discussed during recitation at a later date. There will be no extra credit given during the semester.  If you wish to do well in this class: attend both the lecture and your recitation without fail, take thorough notes at both, and complete all assigned readings. This will be very helpful in preparing you for the exams and will ensure your success on the quizzes and in the course.
