Required Text:
Adler and Adler. 2005. Constructions of
Deviance: Social Power, Context, and Interaction.
Required Website:
http://spot.colorado.edu/~adler It is recommended that you print out the reading lists prior to reading the chapters, please bring them to class as well.
Our Goals:
The focus of the recitation lab is to review and gain understanding of the readings in this course. This will be accomplished through lecture, exercises, and discussion of the concepts in the book as well as other related material.
Expectations for Behavior and Conduct:
- Attendance is mandatory. If you cannot attend your assigned lab due to substantial circumstances, please contact me to make arrangements to attend either another lab of mine or another TA’s.
- I don’t want to hear your personalized cell phone ringer. If your cell phone is on in class, the caller will be subject to a conversation with me. If you are expecting and very important and/or emergency phone call, talk to me before class.
- Do not be late. We only have fifty minutes each session to cover up to four chapters of material, if you are late you will miss out, and you will be made uncomfortable.
- Avoid distractions. Do not bring your I-pod, your Gameboy, PSP, portable DVD player, other reading material, or your late homework for another class. If you are prone to distractions, you will be fielding more questions and attention than you would like to.
- Discussion topics may involve personal or uncomfortable material. Do not attack your peers. You may attack ideas, dismantle theories, discuss openly, or speak from personal experience, but respect everyone in class regardless of different or similar viewpoints.
Grading:
- This recitation is worth 25% of your final grade in Deviance 1004.
- Attendance: The ATA or I will take attendance at the beginning of every class. Although I wouldn’t recommend it, you can miss a total of two recitations and still receive full credit for attendance.
- Participation: This will involve being engaged and actively listening in class. Also, sharing your insights, experiences, or reflections will stimulate discussion. If you are not comfortable speaking in class, please email me and share your thoughts about the material so that you can obtain full credit.
- Office Visit: I will be a lonely TA if no one comes to my cubical to chat. I am requiring you stop by one time at any point in the semester for 5-10 minutes.
- Quizzes/Response Papers: The remainder of your grade will consist of blah blah.
Disabilities Services:
If you qualify for accommodations due to a disability, you can contact Disability Services via Internet at http://www.colorado.edu/disabilityservices/. Please inform Professor Alder, the ATA, and me as soon as possible so that we may adhere to your needs.
