Lab Description

Labs afford students the opportunity to discuss and further explore materials presented in lecture in a small group setting.  As your teaching assistant it is my job to facilitate meaningful discussions within the group in a manner that will ultimately clarify and deepen your understanding of the materials presented.  A lively discussion requires that students be prepared and willing to share their insights and opinions in class.  It is my goal to create a comfortable and open environment where all members of the class are willing to share their ideas and thoughts.  In order for this environment to be achieved, it is crucial that all students behave in a respectful manner towards one another.  Given the nature of this course, our discussions will often focus on issues that will arouse intense feelings and disagreement.  While enthusiastic discussion and debate of these issues is wholeheartedly encouraged, insensitive or mean-spirited comments based on race, ethnicity, gender, class, sexual orientation, religion, ideas or beliefs will not be tolerated.

Assignments and Grades

This lab counts for 25% of your overall course grade.  Grades will be based on the following:

Four Pop Quizzes (10 points each)

  • Each quiz will test your knowledge of our weekly readings and lists.  The quizzes will help prepare you for the exams. Your lowest quiz grade will be dropped.

Participation (28 points)

  • Participation is crucial to your learning and success in lab.  All students should read the assignments for each week and participate in class discussions.  Please come to class with a copy of the “lists” for the week, which you can find on the course website under “Reading Lists.” Please bring your textbooks to lab for easy accessibility.
  • Because of the nature of the subject matter of this class, some students may feel uncomfortable speaking during group discussions.  If this is the case, I expect you to find other ways to participate in a meaningful way.  Alternate examples of participation include sending me an email with your thoughts and insights or bringing me an article from the news that is relevant to the topic of the week, at least one day prior to lab.

Attendance (3 points per weekly session)

  • I will take attendance at the beginning of each recitation by sending around a sign in sheet. It is each student’s responsibility to sign in every week. You are allowed one free unexcused absence. After this, points will be deducted from your lab grade. If you are sick or have a legitimate reason it is your responsibility to contact me with appropriate paperwork as soon as possible. Vacation and preparation for other classes will not be considered legitimate excuses.
  • If you cannot attend the lab for which you are assigned, come to another lab taught by me.  Make sure to sign in for credit. If you cannot attend one of my labs, I encourage you to attend a lab taught by another TA in order to get the materials for the week. You will not, however, receive attendance credit for labs that you attend which are taught by another TA.

Total Point Allocation

Pop Quizzes (lowest grade dropped)             3x10=       30

      Participation                                            28

      Attendance                               3x14=       42

      Total                                             100

Miscellaneous

Adds, Drops and Waitlists

  • Unfortunately, class limits are set according to department guidelines and the fire code, which specifies the number of students that can be enrolled in each classroom.  Therefore, students cannot be added to the class until others have dropped.
  • If you hope to be added to this class, attend all lectures and this lab until you are added.  You are responsible for attendance and participation even if your name is not on the roster at the beginning of the semester.

     Exam Blue Books

  • Each student is required to bring seven exam blue books to lab by the third week. These will be collected by the ATA’s for use at the exams.

Expected Behavior

Respect Yourself

  • Arrive to class on time, well rested, having read the readings and completed all assignments.
  • Present your pertinent thoughts and questions to the class.
  • Participate in all class discussions and activities.

Respect Others

  • Listen attentively and openly to the other students and the TA.
  • Use constructive language; refrain from degrading comments and epithets.
  • Avoid distractions such as newspapers, side-conversations, other class work and the like.
  • Turn off all cell phones and pagers unless the TA has given you specific permission to have them on vibrate mode. Permission will be granted only in extenuating circumstances.
  • Pack your things and leave only after class has ended. If you need to leave early you must obtain permission prior to the end of lab.

Respect this Place

  • Clean your area before you leave.
  • Dispose all trash and clutter in the appropriate receptacles.
  • Return the furniture to its original arrangement if it has been moved.

In addition, familiarize yourself with—and adhere to—the University Honor Code, www.colorado.edu/academics/honorcode, and the University’s Policy on Classroom Behavior, www.colorado.edu/policies/classbehavior.html.

Disability Statement:

If you have specific physical, psychiatric, or learning disabilities and require accommodations, please let the Assistant TA or TA know during the first two weeks of the semester so we may meet your needs appropriately.  You will need to provide documentation of your disability to the Disability Services Office in Willard 322 (ph. 303-492-8671, on the web at http://www.colorado.edu/disabilityservices).

Accommodation for Religious Observances:

Please notify me as soon as possible if you recognize any conflict with test dates, assignment due dates, and/or class attendance that will occur as the result of religious observances.  Notification must be made no later than two weeks prior to the date of conflict so that you and I have time to make other arrangements.  I will do my best to accommodate your religious observance, possibly adjusting an assignment’s due date or the lab attendance requirement for the date missed due to religious reasons.  In the event that a test date conflicts with your religious observance, please notify Dr. Adler and I as soon as possible, since adjusting a test date requires consideration and approval from Dr. Adler.
