Overview
Recitations are designed to give students the opportunity to discuss and further explore issues introduced in lecture within a small, comfortable group setting. As your teaching assistant, it is my job to facilitate discussion, clarify material, and to answer any questions. It is not my job, nor is it my intention, to lecture to you.
Obviously, some subject matter introduced during this class deals with sensitive subjects, and a primary goal of mine is to foster an environment in which everyone feels comfortable to express their ideas and opinions. As a means to this end, I absolutely require that everyone behave respectfully within this forum, including giving others the benefit of the doubt, listening attentively, and understanding the effect your words will have on others. Insensitive comments concerning race, ethnicity, class, gender orientation, sexual orientation, or religion are utterly forbidden. WE CRITIQUE IDEAS, NOT PEOPLE!!

Classroom Decorum and Participation
Please arrive on time, and be prepared to contribute to class discussions. This will make class more entertaining, as well as rewarding! Please be respectful and turn all cell phones on vibrate, and abstain from reading other materials while class is in session. Also, DO NOT PACK UP EARLY. Doing so tells me you place no value in classroom proceedings, in which case you shouldn’t have shown up in the first place. Also, it is against school policy to send any grades over email.
I understand that “life happens”, but it is your responsibility to attend the recitation for which you are registered. I cannot and will not accommodate any switching requests, except in very special cases (disability, religious reasons) and with prior notification.
Recitation Point Distribution
Points will be distributed as follows:
|
Reaction Papers |
30 |
|
Quizzes |
30 |
|
Presentations/ Discussion Facilitation |
15 |
|
Short Papers |
25 |
The reaction papers will be formal responses to questions selected by the T.A.s, and will need to be in essay form. These assignments will be discussed in greater detail when assigned. Papers will be turned in during recitation and worth 10 pts each. Papers should include a cover sheet with your name, section number, recitation time, and the date. As is the case with all papers for this class, you should always use 1 inch margens and 12 point font. (Note: Microsoft Word defalt margens are 1 ¼ so you will need to change them!)
Quizzes will most likely be unannounced, and will be given at the T.A.’s discretion. Grading will be specific to each quiz, but points will be allocated in a normal fashion (10,9,8, etc.).
Everyone will sign up to do a short presentation pertaining to that day’s topic, and will not need to be extremely detailed (approx. 2-5 min), but should be useful and interesting to your fellow students. On your days, you will also be responsible to help me facilitate discussion of that day’s topic.
I reserve the right to change the requirements for the recitation and the grading policies.
Late Papers and
Make-up’s
No late papers or makeup quizzes will be allowed without prior approval or written documentation of illness. If you have to miss class for a club, sport, or religious reason you need to talk to me personally BEFORE so a proper alternative can be found.
Course Agreement Form
You will be required to read and sign a Course Agreement Form, given to you during the first week. Failure to complete this form by Thursday, January 26 will result in you being administratively dropped from the course. If you have any questions pertaining to the information in the form, ask the instructor or me or clarification.
