Overview

The recitation section provides an opportunity to further discuss and explore material from lecture and to review the readings.  The primary goal of recitation is to encourage the learning process through feedback and discussion – thus your preparation for and participation in each meeting are critical to your success as well as the success of everyone else in the classroom.  In order to create a comfortable and open environment where all members of the class are willing to share their thoughts it is crucial that all students behave in a respectful manner towards one another.  While enthusiastic discussion and debate is essential, insensitive or mean-spirited comments based on race, ethnicity, gender, class, sexual orientation, religion, ideas or beliefs are not only inappropriate but unfair.

Grading

Recitation is an integral part of the course as it is the primary place for small group discussion of the lecture and reading material.  Out of 200 points possible in recitation, 100 will be awarded for attendance and 100 for weekly writing assignments.  You will be awarded 100 points for 10 of 12 possible graded attendances and 100 points for 10 of 12 possible graded writing assignments.  Everyone will be allowed to miss 2 of 12 graded class meetings and 2 of 12 graded writing assignments.  No other exceptions or excuses will be allowed either for absence with credit or for a writing assignment with credit.  One-quarter of the possible points for this course are awarded for recitation so it is important to your final grade that you attend recitation regularly and complete your assignments on time.

Attendance will be taken at the beginning of class each week.  The writing assignments are due “Via Email” by 6:00 p.m. the night before class meets so that I have time review your responses in advance.  The weekly writing assignment will be a response paper on the current Monday and previous Wednesday lecture and/or reading assignment, or an alternate assignment to be discussed the previous class. Each assignment should summarize or reflect thoughtfully on the lecture and/or readings for the week and flow in a reasonable form with proper punctuation and spelling consistent with college level work.  Each assignment should be no less than 1/2 page and no more than 1 page.  For the weekly writing assignment you will either receive credit without comment or receive no credit with comment for poor quality work and/or missing work.  You will not be allowed to resubmit an assignment returned with comments or to turn in an assignment late.  It is your exclusive responsibility to assure you that you properly submit your assignment and to document (by saving a “sent” copy or by copying yourself) that you sent each assignment.  Also, the subject line for each assignment must be done in the following format:  SOCY 2031:Your Section Your Name Week #.  That is, course number, colon, your recitation number, first name, last name, week of class the assignment corresponds to.  For example:  SOCY 2031:021 Brian Hawkins Week 2 – no commas, no extra characters, no substitutions.   Any assignments not turned in with this explicit subject format will be returned to you without being graded.

Important Notes

All assignments must be turned in on time, no exceptions.  It is your responsibility to be sure I have your correct email address and that your email is working properly.  You are required to attend your assigned section.  You may, if absolutely necessary, attend another section with prior consent, though it will be your responsibility, not mine, to assure you receive credit.  Absolutely no discussion of your grades will be done before, during or after class or via email.  If you need to discuss grades then come to my office hours or make an appointment.  You will be responsible for keeping copies of all assignments with regard to any questions or issues – if you cannot provide your own copy I will not discuss the assignment with you.  Also, in the case of a dispute, my records prevail.

Expectations and Behavior

Please bring your textbook and notes from lecture to class each week.  You are responsible for knowing the material and announcements presented during lectures and recitations whether or not you attend class. Please arrange with another student to get missed notes and announcements. Please do not disrupt other students’ ability to participate (e.g., do not arrive late or leave early, do not side-talk, begin packing your belongings before class ends, leave cell phones on, etc.).

The University has a classroom behavior policy, which can be found at the following website: http://www.colorado.edu/policies/classbehavior.html . Students are required to adhere to the behavior standards listed in this policy document and to refrain from disrupting class.

Both students and faculty are expected to abide by the University’s honor code, which can be found at the following website: http://www.colorado.edu/academics/honorcode/. Cheating and plagiarism are taken very seriously and are grounds for failure in this course.

Disability Statement

If you qualify for accommodations because of a disability, please submit a letter from Disability Services to Professor Primm or myself within the first two weeks of class.  It is your responsibility to contact Disability Services and arrange for a letter to be provided to you.  You can contact Disability Services at: 303-492-8671, Willard 322, www.Colorado.EDU/disabilityservices

Other Obligations

Every effort will be made to reasonably and fairly deal with students who, because of religious obligations, participation in athletics or other structured activities have just cause to request assistance coping with conflicts with attendance or assignments.  All students to whom this applies must notify Professor Primm or myself in writing listing specific obligations and dates within the first two weeks of class.

Waitlisted Students/Changing Recitation Sections

If you are waitlisted in the course I have no authority to add you either to the lecture or to a lab section.  If you are trying to add the course I recommend you continue to attend the lecture and a lab section and contact Professor Primm with your request.  For students who wish to change lab sections, do NOT drop the section you have in an attempt to add another.  Due to any waitlist you may inadvertently loose your place in the course.  If you wish to change lab sections I recommend you contact either myself or Professor Primm with your request immediately.  If your request can be accommodated we will inform you.

*** This syllabus is subject to change - please check the course website regularly for updates ***

***If you miss the first two recitation section classes you will be dropped from the course***
