SOCIOLOGY 4024: JUVENILE DELINQUENCY

SOCY 4024 is a survey course on American delinquency. Topics to be discussed include the history of juvenile delinquency, its measurement, causes, social control, and policy recommendations.

 

TEXT:  Robert M. Regoli and John D. Hewitt, Delinquency in Society, 6th edition (2006). (NO textbook is on reserve in Norlin Library.)

 

If you purchase a NEW copy of the text, you may provide me with a copy of the receipt and I will make a donation from the royalties received on purchases of new books to the University of Colorado. Authors earn no royalties on used copies; so only provide me with a receipt if you purchased a new copy of the text.(I receive about $4.00 for each new book sold.)

 

TESTS (400 points): There will be 4 tests in the class, each worth 100 points. (Test 4 will be a comprehensive final exam.) The tests may be a combination of short answer essay and objective questions. The format of each test will be announced in class. Tests will cover reading assignments and material presented in lecture.

 

Bring a #2 pencil to each exam.

Exam dates are:

 

September 28, 2006 (Thursday)

October 26, 2006 (Thursday)

December 7, 2006 (Thursday)

TEST 4 for the 9:30 AM class is Saturday, December 16 at 10:30 AM.

TEST 4 for the 11:00 AM class is on Monday, December 18 at 1:30 PM

 

There are no make-up exams. If you miss an exam you will receive a zero (0). You will only be allowed to take a make-up exam if you provide a note dated for the day of the exam from a physician stating that illness prevented you from attending class.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Attendance (100 points):

 

If you miss one or fewer class sessions you will earn 100 points; if you miss two class sessions you will earn 75 points; if you miss three class sessions you will earn 50 points; if you miss four class sessions you will earn 25 points; if  you miss more than four class sessions you will earn 0 points. (You will only be excused from missing class if you provide a dated note from a physician stating that illness prevented you from attending class. You will not be excused from class to attend weddings, go home early for Fall break, etc.)

 

It is your responsibility to sign the attendance sheet at each class meeting, not mine. I will not accept responsibility for you not signing the attendance sheet.  If you do not sign the sheet, you will be counted absent regardless of the reason why. If you arrive late to class or leave class early and miss signing the attendance sheet, you will be counted as being absent (missing class).

There is no extra credit work in the class. Your grade is based on test scores and attendance.
