Dear Colleagues,
In response to some observed errors and
omissions in the Congressional District Dataset, I am notifying you of some
changes and additions to the data. They
are as follows:
·
Problem: In the 78th
House, are the listed 44th and 45th New York CD's really at-large, and if so,
how were district data constructed? In
the 78th-80th House, were the Arizona, New Mexico, and North Dakota congressional districts at-large, and if so how were they constructed?
·
Correction: A check
of the 78th and 80th Congressional Directories reveals that all the districts
in question were indeed at-large districts.
New
Mexico
and North
Dakota
districts reflect statewide values, which is consistent with the at-large
characterization. The data for Arizona 1st and 2nd and NY 44th and
45th were not correct, but now reflect the statewide totals.
- Problem: Missing and incorrect values for POPULATN variable in
some CD's in 79th House. 88th House
also had a small number of incorrect values for Alabama.
- Correction: All values corrected.
- Problem: In the 104th and 105th congresses, the Maine LANDSQMI
variable is inconsistent with 103rd: too large (1st District:9367524, 2nd
District 70571580)
- Correction: Maine was redistricted in 104th, so values
are slightly different than the 103rd.
Correct values should be 1st District: 3617 SQMI, 2nd District:
27244. Random check of other
LANDSQMI variables in other states reveals no apparent problems. Data crosschecked US census website
(www.census.gov).
- Problem: 43 missing cases in MANUF variable for
the 105th Congress
- Correction: Missing data replaced.
