On July 9, 2000 either 85% or 55% (depending on whether you believe labor or government) of organized labor engaged in a general strike or "stoppage" in protest of the lowering of salaries of public workers (with wages higher than $1000/month) 12% to 15% in order to help pay foreign debt. Not only was garbage collection stopped but bank employees spread uncollected garbage on streets -- a scene that was given considerable TV coverage.
