Oratorical Contest, 2009

ELIGIBILITY

 

Participants shall be citizens of or lawful permanent residents of the United States. Contestants must be bona fide students, under the age of 20, and presently enrolled in high school or junior high school (public, parochial, military, private or home school) in which the curriculum is considered to be of high school level between grade 9 and 12.

 

APPEARANCE

 

Uniforms are not permitted. Appropriate business attire is required by all contestants. Contestants are not permitted to wear awards and medals from previous competition.

 

CERTIFICATION

 

Certification will be conducted at your local sponsoring American Legion post and will consist of delivering your Prepared Oration and one of the Assigned Topics.  In addition to providing a coaching opportunity, the certification process guarantees that your material is of a competitive nature.  Local posts will be responsible for scheduling these certification sessions.  Certification forms will be completed and submitted to the state chairs. 

 

TRAVEL AND EXPENSES

 

The Colorado American Legion will pay travel and lodging expenses for certified contestants and their chaperones living over 50 miles from the contest site. All contestants traveling overnight must be accompanied by a chaperone. (Defined as a person over 21 years of age). 

 

Expenses to the National contest are paid for the American Legion, Department of Colorado.
